Kirtan & Langar

Once a week the mandir fills with singing, and then everybody eats. Kirtan from 6pm, aarti at 7pm, and langar — a free vegetarian meal — served to every single person who walks through the door.

What happens

Kirtan is devotional singing — bhents to the Mother, carried by harmonium and dholak, with everyone joining in. You do not need to know the words; plenty of people who come every week are still learning them.

At 7pm the singing gives way to aarti, the offering of light before Maa Kali and Maa Bhameshwari. And then the food comes out.

Langar is a free vegetarian meal, served to everyone present. There is no charge and no questions. You sit and eat alongside everybody else — that is the whole point of it.

A plate of langar — simple, hot and vegetarian, cooked fresh in the mandir's own kitchen. The same meal for everybody, whoever you are.

Who is it for?

Everyone. Devotees, neighbours, curious first-timers, anyone in need of a hot meal — of any faith, or none. If you have never been inside a Hindu temple, Tuesday evening is genuinely the best time to come: there is singing to carry you, and a meal to sit down to afterwards.

If you know someone in Willenhall who would be glad of a free, dignified meal and some company on a Tuesday evening, please tell them about us.

Allergies: langar and prasad are prepared in a kitchen that handles nuts, dairy and gluten. Please ask a sevadar about ingredients — they will gladly help.

Volunteer in the langar kitchen

Langar exists because of sevadars — the volunteers who cook, serve and clear up every Tuesday. Giving an evening in Maa's kitchen is seva of the highest kind, and newcomers are always welcome.
